Hysteroscopy

Overview:

Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your uterus using a thin, lighted device called a hysteroscope. This procedure can help diagnose and treat a variety of uterine conditions, such as fibroids, adhesions, and polyps.

Why is Hysteroscopy performed?

  • To investigate abnormal bleeding or heavy periods
  • To evaluate infertility
  • To identify structural problems in the uterus
  • To remove growths such as fibroids or polyps
  • To correct uterine abnormalities, such as scarring or adhesions (on septal resection)

What is the Hysteroscopy Procedure like?

The hysteroscopy procedure is performed in an outpatient setting under local or general anesthesia. During the procedure, a hysteroscope is inserted into the vaginal cavity, and then through the cervix into the uterus. The hysteroscope has a light and a camera that transmits images of the inside of the uterus to a screen, allowing the doctor to examine the tissue.

If any growth or abnormalities are found, your doctor may choose to remove them using small instruments passed through the hysteroscope. After the procedure, you may experience some cramping or bloating. You may also have a small amount of discharge or spotting.

What are the risks associated with Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is generally a safe procedure, but like any medical procedure, there are some risks involved, including:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Adverse reaction to anaesthesia

It is important to discuss any concerns you may have with your doctor before the procedure. It is important to inform the staff at Aspire if you have any known allergies or if you have any pre-existing illness.

 Preparing for Hysteroscopy

The doctor or nurse practitioner will provide you with specific instructions on how to prepare for your hysteroscopy. Some general guidelines include:

  • Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 6 hours before the procedure
  • Inform your doctor of any medications you are taking and any allergies you have
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself.

A hysteroscopy is a safe and effective procedure that can help diagnose and treat a variety of uterine conditions. If you have any questions or concerns about the procedure, we encourage you to discuss them with your doctor.

Fertility Services Offered
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
IVF is a fertility treatment that involves fertilizing eggs with sperm in a laboratory setting. It is commonly used for various infertility issues, such as blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count, or unexplained infertility.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Fertility Preservation (Egg Freezing, Sperm Freezing, Embryo Freezing)
Fertility preservation allows individuals or couples to preserve their reproductive cells (eggs, sperm, or embryos) for future use. It is commonly chosen by those who want to delay childbearing due to personal or medical reasons.
Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)
PGT is a specialized genetic testing procedure performed on embryos before they are transferred to the uterus during an IVF cycle. It helps identify genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities in embryos, allowing for the selection of healthy embryos for transfer.
Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy
These minimally invasive surgical procedures are used to diagnose and treat various reproductive conditions. Laparoscopy involves inserting a small camera through tiny incisions to examine the pelvic organs, while hysteroscopy involves inserting a thin tube with a camera through the cervix to visualize the inside of the uterus.
Ovulation Induction
Ovulation induction involves the use of medications to stimulate the ovaries to release eggs. It is commonly used in cases of hormonal imbalances or ovulation disorders to increase the chances of natural conception or enhance the success of assisted reproductive technologies.
