Dietary tips to optimise your outcome of Fertility Treatment

  1. In addition to having a healthy lifestyle, exercise and a good treatment plan, good dietary habit is very essential part of infertility treatment.
  2. Add fibre rich more complex (slow) carbohydrates (like fruits, vegetables, and beans, whole cereals) and avoid highly processed direct sugars (like refined sugar, cookies, cakes).
  3. Protein content in the diet should ideally come more from plant resources like beans, nuts, seeds etc and less from red meat as the calorie provided is less and hence can help in weight reduction
  4. Consumption of one or two glasses of whole milk or other full fat dairy products like yogurt. It is shown to be helpful in women with anovulatory infertility.
  5. Avoid high fat, fast food, deep fried food items.
  6. Avoid smoking, alcohol(including beer) and caffeinated drinks
  7. During long distance car travel, take frequent breaks to stretch your legs and visit the toilet.
  8. Seafood is a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids, but be careful while eating fish. Don’t eat sushi or any raw fish. Avoid fish that have high mercury content due to their environment—including swordfish, king mackerel and shark.
  9. Your consultant may recommend additional nutritional supplements based on your dietary habits. Avoid vitamin supplements containing Vitamin A.
  10. Male partners in addition to following similar diet patterns, may take multivitamin supplements with Zinc and Selenium.
  11. Female partners should essentially be on Folic acid supplements (minimum daily requirement of 400mcg) to avoid early miscarriages, and structural abnormalities in the baby.
